The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, launched and officially opened the Oroutumba community health post in Epupa, some 140 kilometres north-west of Opuwo.

The launch signifies the ministry's mission to provide integrated, affordable, accessible, and equitable health services in rural communities.

Dr. Shangula says the opening of the Oroutumba community health post strengthens the public health care system and brings services closer to the people.

The launch marks a vital journey for the government towards enhancing the accessibility of quality health care services in line with achieving the vision of universal health coverage.

"This means that one does not need to sell goats, cows, or other properties in order to access or receive health care services. This is what the launch of the community health post signifies and demonstrates."

Many people who reside in remote areas still walk long distances to acquire services and often suffer financial hardships.

"In fact, it is part and parcel of the Namibian government's plan that was approved by the cabinet to mobilise resources in order to strengthen the public health system. The plan is costing more than N$16 billion and will be implemented over a period of 5 years."

The health post at Oroutumba will provide a range of services, such as dental services, HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, malnutrition detection, immunisation, general screening, maternal and child health care, treatment for common ailments, health education, and antenatal care services.

According to the US Ambassador to Namibia, who was represented at the event, the US government has so far assisted Namibia in establishing 12-community health posts in seven regions, and it has also supported the country's community health workers programme.

"PEPFAR and the global fund have been collaborating with the ministry of health in these efforts to bring health care services to remote communities. Community health posts are designed to bring quality health care services to the Namibian people and will hopefully encourage an increase in health-seeking behaviour among members of the community."
