As we track the regional governor's state of the regions addresses, we turn to Kavango East region. During his address, Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo emphasized the region's efforts to empower the youth through sport initiatives.
As part of the region's notable sport achievements, Kavango East is home to the country's speedster Christine Mboma, who, at just 18 years old, became the first Namibian woman to win an Olympic medal, taking silver in the 200 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
In pursuit of further sporting excellence, Cuca Tops Football Club from Rundu has been promoted to Namibia's top-flight league for the first time in over 20 years and will carry the region's flag in the Debmarine Premiership alongside Julinho Sporting in the new season.
Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo says the region strives to empower youth in sport through hosting the Governor's Cup and various sporting events.
"In our effort to promote sports in the region, we have managed to host the Governor's Cup, which served as a platform for selecting the regional teams for soccer and netball. As a result, two players were selected for the under-20 and under-19 national teams for soccer and netball respectively.'' he said
Despite the region being home to Rundu Stadium, the Governor did not mention plans to renovate it or construct any other sport facilities in the region.
