Walvis Bay continues to position itself to become the transit hub for southern Africa.

The town has seen unprecedented developments in the handling of more traffic, cargo, and heavy industrial business with its new container terminal and the development of the SADC Gateway Port.

The existing road network is said to have become old and limited to deal with the growing number of trucks to and from Walvis Bay to other destinations.

While addressing the region, Erongo Governor Neville Andre said the objective of the development is to ensure quicker and less congested traffic.

Andre said the condition of the B2 is in no way commensurate with the rapidly developing harbour in Walvis Bay.

While road infrastructure projects are well supported in other parts of the country, the B2, with its narrow single lanes, remains in a condition that is not appropriate for the traffic this road carries, especially for heavy-duty trucks.

He further noted that as the industry operates to a large extent in protected areas, the expiry of the Policy on Exploration and Mining in Protected Areas at the end of 2023 poses another challenge.
