The Women-Led AI Sustainability Youth Summit took place today in the capital under the theme: Powering Namibian Youth: AI Sustainability, Digital Transformation, and Climate Change.

The event was to interrogate how artificial intelligence (AI) can be integrated to solve issues such as food security, unpredictable weather patterns, climate change, and dwindling agricultural yields.

Due to the rise and change in climate patterns, which resulted in water shortages, environmental degradation, and the need for sustainable development, it has become critical to equip the youth with tools and knowledge to address these issues using the power of AI and digital transformation.

The event was therefore aimed at discussing, inspiring action, and creating opportunities for young leaders in the digital era and marking a pivotal moment in the journey towards a more sustainable, equitable, and technologically driven future.

The Deputy Executive Director in the office of the Vice President, Mateus Kaholongo, said the summit plays a major role in leading the way for creating a future where women are at the forefront in enhancing information technology to foster innovation, problem-solving, and leadership.

He pointed out that Namibia is committed to building an inclusive ecosystem where young women can thrive, innovate, and shape solutions that will carry the nation to a more sustainable future.

"AI is more than just a tool for efficiency; it is an engine for solving some of the world's greatest challenges. From climate change to food security, from water management to renewable energy. AI holds the key to creating systems that are both intelligent and sustainable. However, the full potential of AI can only be realised if we include diverse voices in its design and application, particularly the voices of women."

He further stated that the summit serves as a platform to break barriers, inspire, and mentor the next generation of female leaders who will drive sustainable AI solutions across Africa and beyond.

Kaholongo emphasised that Namibia is taking bold steps to empower young women with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to excel in AI and sustainability.

"Our youth is our greatest asset. The energy, creativity, and resilience that you bring to the table are exactly what we need to build a sustainable future. Your voices, your ideas, and your willingness to take risks are what will shape our policies, innovations, and solutions of tomorrow. AI is not a future technology; it is a present reality, and the youth, particularly young women, must be at the forefront of its application for sustainability."
