The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) launched the pilot of the Namibia Household Income Expenditure Survey at Otjiwarongo to be conducted in eight regions of the country.

The study will be carried out in the Erongo, Hardap, Kavango West, Khomas, Kunene, Omaheke, Omusati, and Zambezi regions from 30 September to 20 October.

Speaking at the launch and signing of the oath of secrecy by the field interviewers, Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, James Uerikua, called on the interviewers to carry out their duties with the utmost respect and professionalism.

"When you visit households, you are not just collecting numbers, you are interacting with people. It's a social connection platform. You are entering their homes, their houses, their personal space, their privacy, and their lives. Be respectful, be kind, and understand that the people may be hesitant or unsure of your intent. Therefore, it is important to explain your intent clearly and, of course, without any argument."

The commencement of the pilot study aims to test NSA's readiness to ensure the success of the full survey to be conducted in March next year for a year.

A total of 32 interviewers signed an oath of secrecy to uphold the privacy and confidentiality of respondents.

The Household Income Expenditure Survey is usually conducted every five years, however, the last survey was conducted ten years ago due to the emergence of COVID-19 and a lack of funds.

The survey is meant to collect data to help understand Namibia's household income and expenditure patterns, as well as measure poverty and inequality conditions.

The data collected is used for planning and monitoring of development and other projects.
