The Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association of Namibia (MJA) has expressed deep concern over the safety and security of judicial officers following a brazen arson attack on the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court.
The attack, which occurred on 1 October 2024, saw the public prosecutor’s office set ablaze by an unknown individual. While no injuries were reported, the incident has caused significant damage to the office, highlighting a critical security gap at court facilities.
In a statement issued today, MJA President Victor Nyazo called for immediate action to address the security vulnerabilities at courts across the country.
Nyazo noted that the safety of judicial officers and court staff is of paramount importance, and this attack underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures at all court premises.
He further stressed that the MJA is aware of several unreported incidents that have similarly raised alarms about the safety of judicial personnel in various regions.
The MJA’s call for action comes shortly after the election of a new executive committee at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Swakopmund on 25 September 2024. The newly elected leadership includes President Victor Nyazo, Vice President Olivia Van der Byl, Secretary Helvi Shikalepo, and Jo-Rina Jagger is the Treasurer, while Oundjarere Ndjiharine will serve as an additional member.
