The Swapo Party has condemned the recent street naming of streets and allocation of unserviced plots by the Keetmanshoop Town Council, describing it as 'cheap politicking'.
The council honoured Landless Peoples Movement leader Bernadus Swartbooi and late businessman and football administrator Ludwig Helu with street names.
Addressing a media conference at Keetmanshoop, Swapo Regional Coordinator, Mathew Mumbala, argued that the Landless People's Movement-dominated council did not follow street naming procedures for cheap politicking at the expense of honesty and integrity.
He further said that leaders of format and substance, who deserve recognition, were purposely overlooked for political reasons.
"Swapo Party views the action as myopic and immature with the goal of achieving benefit at the expense of long-term pain. This conduct reflects a leadership out of time after wasting a valuable five-year period on personal and non-development activities," he said.
Approached for comment, the Mayor of Keetmanshoop, McDonald Hanse, said the street naming was an ongoing process that is done per the applicable by-laws and policies.
He added the council's mandate is to provide land to its residents, and this was done in line with the Flexible Land Tenure Act.
The Mariental Town Council and Oranjemund Town Council also recently recognised LPM leader Bernadus Swartbooi by naming streets after him.
Commenting, Oranjemund Mayor Elias Kasemba said he has no time for political agendas.
