The Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation is urging stakeholders in Mozambique to ensure peace and stability ahead of the official announcement of the election results.

In a statement released on Monday, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is also the President of Tanzania, pleaded for peace to prevail.

This appeal follows the deaths of Paulo Guambe, a political party representative for lPODEMOS, and the party's lawyer, Elvino Dias, on Saturday.

The two were ambushed and shot in broad daylight in Maputo by gunmen who attacked their car.

Hassan therefore calls on Mozambique's law enforcement authorities to ensure necessary measures are taken and exercise restraint as investigations are underway.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has condemned the killings.

Mahamat calls on the Mozambican security authorities to undertake the necessary investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Chairperson urges all political actors to maintain a peaceful disposition as the country awaits the official declaration of the final results by the Constitutional Council.

Mozambique voted on the 9th of this month in the Presidential, Legislative and Provincial Elections.

The statement reads that SADC is aware that the Electoral Management Bodies and other relevant institutions are finalising the election results expected to be released in due course.

SADC declared that elections in Mozambique took place in a peaceful manner.
