The Grootfontein Municipality has named 27 streets in Omulunga Extention 2 after different minerals that are indigenous to the Grootfontein Constituency.

Street names provide essential references for navigation, helping residents, visitors, and emergency services locate addresses easily.

However, due to no street renaming committee in place back then, streets in Grootfontein residential areas such as Omulunga, previously known as Soweto, have not been named since independence.

"Even if a house in the location burns down when the police come, they can be directed by the street name; even when we receive the strangers coming and they want to go, then that sign or the name can direct them," said Grootfontein Mayor, Talitha Garises.

Acting Grootfontein Municipality's Chief Executive Officer, Indileni Lungameni, said the council decided to name the streets after minerals, particularly gemstones and precious stones, and not people.

"We do not want to start with the names of individuals; they always bring controversy, so to kick start the process, we thought, Why don't we come up with a theme that will generate neutral names just to avoid controversy and smoothen the whole process?"

Streets were given names such as copper, diamond, and magnesium.

Grootfontein remains with 12 more extensions with no names, a situation that presents a challenge, especially in regard to municipal service delivery.

The next street naming will be done in Extension 4, and the theme will focus on animals found in the region, while Extension 3 streets will be named after revolutionary leaders of Africa.
