Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus expressed her confidence in the role of the NBC's  new board of directors in ensuring comprehensive election coverage.

They are Oaitse Van Staden, as Deputy Chairperson, Kula Simson, and Cletius Simasiku.

The minister said the nbc has consistently shown resilience in challenging times and is expected to rise to the occasion once again with the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections, urging the new board to take their task of covering the democratic process seriously.

Theofelus emphasised that her ministry will continue to support the NBC's efforts to share information accurately and independently, maintaining that the ministry's support in no way infringes on the mandate of the broadcaster.

"We look forward to the board's guidance and believe that under their leadership, the NBC will uphold its duty to cover the elections with integrity, ensuring that Namibian democracy is showcased at its best."

She said it is important to maintain a collaborative relationship between the Ministry and the broadcaster, aimed at addressing any challenges and driving progress.

Theofelus invited the board members to sign a performance agreement in line with public sector practices.

"As a Minister, I am bound by a performance agreement with the President and the Prime Minister, as are all political entities, and it is only fitting that we expect the same level of accountability from directors who are tasked with guiding state-owned enterprises."

The signing ceremony is intended to ensure mutual accountability and establish clear measures of success.

Board chairperson Lazarus Jacobs expressed his gratitude to the Ministry for its continued support.

Jacobs also welcomed the introduction of a performance agreement for the board, emphasising the importance of accountability in managing public funds.

"It's only fair because we are dealing with public funds. The public deserves to know what we are doing and how we are staying true to our mission, which is to educate and entertain."

He further noted that NBC is now shifting its focus more towards information rather than entertainment.

Jacobs will continue to serve as Chairperson, while Tim Ekandjo and Michael Jimmy will also serve for three more years.
