The Ministry of Labour has ordered Zhongmei Engineering Group Pty Ltd to halt all construction work on the ZMTR9-Airport Road Project in Windhoek, effective October 23.

This decision comes after a tragic accident that occurred that day, resulting in the death of a male worker while he was on the job.

An inspection uncovered serious safety violations at the site. The Ministry determined that the company failed to provide a safe working environment. The deceased worker was instructed to lift heavy loads using a crane without appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet.

Additionally, untrained workers were assigned to hazardous tasks without supervision, and the cranes had not undergone regular inspections. The Ministry also noted that the company neglected to identify hazards and provide essential personal protective equipment, including masks, goggles, and gloves.

Construction will remain halted until the company addresses these issues and receives approval from a Labour inspector.

A report is being prepared for the Prosecutor General to review the case.
