The community of Hoachanas Settlement in the Hardap Region celebrated the opening of the first-ever community library.
The opening of the Hoachanas Community Library is the culmination of the longstanding effort of the late Gaob PSM Kooper of the Kai||Khaun Traditional Authority.
Hoacahanas is the main seat of the Kai||Khaun Traditional Authority.
The Chinese Embassy, Sinomine Tsumeb Smelter, and the Bank of Namibia contributed financially and in kind to establishing the community library.
Speaking at the library's opening, the Director of the Hoachanas Community Library, Markus Kooper, said, "This idea is coming a long way; our history in Hoachanas is long, and our suffering is also very long. We need to bring in some changes, some developments that would bring a new face. What I really would like to give is, let's use this facility to its maximum use, young and old."
Officiating at the opening of the community library, the Minister of Justice Yvonne Dausab said the facility is more than just a building, but a space where the community can access information, connect, and grow together.
"It is a meaningful start for many young people here in Hoachanas, a place where students can finally access books that may not even be available in schools or delve into the rich history of Namibia where teachers can offer their students fresh perspectives. It is a place where parents and community members can cultivate a culture of reading and finally pick up a book they had always wanted to explore."
Also speaking at the occasion were the representatives of the Chinese Embassy and Bank of Namibia.
