The Popular Democratic Movement has donated water infrastructure worth N$75,000 to members of the Shack Dwellers Federation in Kavango West's Rupara Village.
After constructing their houses in 2023, 32 members of the Shack Dwellers Federation had to source income to cater for their own water needs.
The villagers used to travel long distances to the river to fetch water for their daily requirements.
The members got lucky after approaching the political party for assistance.
PDM Leader McHenry Venaani says the gesture reflects the party's ongoing commitment to enhance access to clean water in local communities.
"We are doing this exercise to show that water accessibility is a serious problem. We are seeing a lot of Namibians in the Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions suffering from thirst and without water. This demonstration demonstrates that we are a caring political party; we have been doing this over a number of years. There was no one to help this community; houses were built, no water, communities were forced to bring water here, and they couldn't, and they're crying, Tate Venaani, what is it that you can do, and we said let's demonstrate something that this thing can do."
Venaani says this is not the first time the PDM has embarked on helping communities in need of waterfirst exercise that PDM is doing in helping communities address water shortages.
Apart from Rupara village, PDM has given water infrastructure to Kavurira village in Mukwe constituency, Kavango East region, Chinchimani, and Bukalo.
The project includes a pipeline for two kilometres, the water tank, and a stand.
