Police in the Omaheke Region have raised concerns over a spike in vehicle part thefts. Over ten cases have been reported since September, and two suspects have been arrested so far.
Speaking at a media briefing in Gobabis, the Head of Community Policing Subdivision, Chief Inspector Fina Sakajengenga, stressed that the force has observed an increase in offences such as stealing of vehicle accessories such as wheels, spotlights, and mirrors.
Sakajengenga added that in most cases, the culprits target cars parked at homes with short fences or boundary walls and without garages.
Sakajengenga noted that thieves also target vehicles at public gatherings, so car owners need to be very vigilant at this time of year.
"The public should be informed that these criminals are committing the above-mentioned crime between 22h00 and 04h00 in the morning while the people are sleeping and between 09h00 and 11h00 while people are at work. The Namibian force and the public can put these prevention measures in place to discourage criminals from committing theft out of motor vehicles."
The Head of Community Policing Subdivision also calls upon local business owners to beef up security at their buildings and strongly discourages the public from buying loose car accessories without proper documentation.
Chief Inspector Sakajengenga also reminded the nation that the Namibian police have commenced with festive season operations, and it is expected that the general public assists the force in the fight against crime.
