The Speaker of Zimbabwe's National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, has acknowledged the contributions of his Namibian counterpart during a valedictory ceremony held at the 56th Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF) in Livingstone, Zambia.
The event was organised to recognise Professor Peter Katjavivi's role in efforts to transform the SADC-PF into a regional parliament.
Advocate Mudenda, a member of the SADC-PF Executive Committee and leader of its strategic lobbying team, noted Katjavivi's contributions to regional integration and the transformation of the Forum.
He highlighted the significance of Katjavivi's efforts and their alignment with the Forum's mission to enhance regional collaboration.
Mudenda also traced the Forum's origins to Namibia, referencing the 1992 Windhoek Declaration, which set the foundation for its establishment.
SADC-PF President Roger Mancienne referred to Katjavivi as an advocate of regional integration.
Speaker of Zambia's National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, acknowledged Katjavivi's contributions, stating that his knowledge and experience would continue to influence the region even after his tenure.
During his valedictory remarks, Professor Katjavivi reflected on his career, which spans from Namibia's independence struggle to regional cooperation efforts.
He expressed gratitude to the SADC-PF and urged its members to continue prioritising initiatives that benefit the region's citizens.
Katjavivi also mentioned Namibia's active role in the Forum and highlighted achievements such as the establishment of the SADC-PF Trust Fund.
He pledged continued support for the Forum in a non-active capacity following his retirement.
The 56th Plenary Assembly marks Katjavivi's final participation as Speaker.
Since March 2015, he has served in this role, with previous positions including founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia, Ambassador, and Director-General of the National Planning Commission.
Katjavivi is also a member of the SADC-PF Executive Committee and vice president of the IPU Task Force on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
He is set to retire as Speaker in March 2025.
