The government of Cuba has honoured President Nangolo Mbumba with the Order of José Martí, an award named after that country’s national hero.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez bestowed the award on Dr. Mbumba during an official ceremony in Havana, in recognition of his pre- and post-independence contributions in various roles.
He is the third Namibian leader to be awarded the Order of José Martí, the highest national honour in Cuba, bestowed for outstanding service.
Previous Namibian recipients are Founding President Sam Nujoma and late President Dr. Hage Geingob, who was awarded posthumously in February this year.
The recognition of Namibian leaders, Dr. Mbumba says, symbolises the strong bond of friendship that exists between the people and governments of the two countries.
