The Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans of HIV/AIDS (OEWONA) and other vulnerable people received donations, including boxes of masks, examination gloves, isolation gowns, bedding, and clothing.

The donation, which came through the Erzgebirge Hospital in Germany, is valued at more than a million dollars.

The patron of the organisation, Penehupifo Pohamba, said the organisation continues to create an enabling framework to support, protect, and promote the well-being of people affected by HIV/AIDS and reduce their vulnerability.

The former First Lady added that since its establishment, OEWONA has initiated various programmes, targeting those affected by HIV and AIDS by providing care, educational support, and maternal shelters for expecting mothers and people with disabilities.

Pohamba recalled the important roles played by various stakeholders, such as the government of Germany.

"This donation, especially masks and examination gloves, will be distributed to some health facilities in remote areas in different regions where there is limited access to face masks. Other targeted populations who will benefit from this donation are vulnerable people, the San community, paediatric wards, maternal shelters, kindergartens, and some elderly homes."

The donor, Marcel Koch, emphasised that Namibia is a developing country that faces numerous challenges related to health and agriculture; there is a need to join hands.

"But with our persistence and optimism, we made it. I stand here in front of a donation made by the hospitals I run but also by many private persons who felt the urge to help and do something good."

The Mayor of Gobabis, Melba Tjozongoro, said the donation will aid expectant mothers who are housed at the Lady Pohamba Maternity Hospital at Gobabis.

"This will offer them a safe and comfortable space where they can receive provisional care as they are waiting for the arrival of their beautiful new lives."
