The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) says it is prepared to provide answers to questions emanating from the November 27th national elections as well as the inspection of non-sensitive election materials.

The inspection of election material came after the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) and the Landless People's Movement (LPM) approached the Electoral Court to compel the ECN to provide information on the National Assembly election.

"From the perspective of the commission, our task is done; from the perspective of the political parties, it is perhaps for them now to keep the information that they have received and study it. But in any event, this information that was availed from our perspective is information that was already in the public domain. This is information from polling places; it's in the form of a file; some of it was posted at polling places, and now it's all in one file. Now obviously, it is up to the political parties to decide the way forward. But from our side, we are fully satisfied that everything that was conducted during polling and inspection is above board, and we are ready to defend everything that has transpired," explained Commissioner Pius Iikwambi.

According to the Electoral Act, any possible irregularities and non-compliance related to the elections that may be uncovered during the inspection exercise will have to meet stringent requirements as per sections 114 and 115 of the Act.

These sections deal with the unsealing of sensitive electoral material, an action only allowed through a court order.
