Young people are encouraged to stay safe and healthy and avoid crime, drug use, and violence during the festive season.

Swakopmund junior town councillor Indila Abraham says as the world approaches the last days of the year, young people should stay away from peer groups that could lead to problems in their lives.

Many young people resort to crime, drug use, and violent extremism due to poverty.

Positive nurturing can, therefore, enable young people to participate in productive activities that enhance their welfare and economic stability, she said.

Abraham highlighted peer pressure as a key factor driving young people towards drug and alcohol abuse.

She also noted that some young people turn to drugs after losing family members, experiencing heartbreak, or dealing with unemployment.

She, therefore, urged the government to provide youth with training in income-generating activities, savings, and entrepreneurship skills.
