The Oshakati Town Council is making strides in infrastructure development, with multiple projects currently underway to improve the residents' living standards and sanitation.

The projects include the construction of gravity sewer systems aimed at transforming the informal settlements into healthier and more organised communities.

The town's mayor, Leonard Hango, said that the ongoing gravity sewer project in the Evululuko informal settlement is nearing completion, and the project has already brought hope and a better quality of life to residents.

"The gravity project in Evululuko is running perfectly under Omatondo Construction. We are at 80% complete, and we hope to finish by January, provided the rains don't disrupt progress."

In addition, the council has launched a second gravity sewer and water reticulation project at Ehenye Extension 12 valued at N$5.2 million.

This project is expected to be completed within six months.

The council is also encouraging residents to embrace these developments, particularly in Evululuko, where a special incentive has been introduced.

"To encourage the community in Evululuko to connect to the network, we are offering a free connection incentive. This means if they connect within 12 months of project completion, they won't pay anything. This incentive is aimed at promoting better sanitation and improved hygiene in our communities."

The projects are part of Oshakati's strategic development plan, aimed at enhancing public health and preventing waterborne diseases.

"All these projects are part of our strategic plan that we have put forth. We are just implementing our plan as it goes. We urge communities to work hand in hand with contractors on-site so that we are able to finish these projects in record time."

Looking beyond these current projects, the council has completed surveying and planning for additional informal settlements, including Kandjengedi South and North, Oneshila, and Upindi.

This will pave the way for future realignments and service installations in the coming year.
