The people of the Guinas constituency in the Oshikoto Region are still grieving the sudden loss of their councillor, Marthinus Kainda, who died October last year.
They described Marthinus as more than just a politician; instead, a friend and a strong community supporter whose unexpected death left a significant void.
Haikondo Jackson, a resident of the Ombili Foundation, expressed the urgent need for a successor who truly embodies the values and needs of the community. “Our constituency needs a leader like Marthinus. We need someone who understands our culture and respects us,” Jackson stated.
George Kela, who lives at Onder Farm, expressed his sadness and anxiety about the future. “Councillor Kainda was dedicated to the people of Guinas. He worked hard on the issues that mattered to us and made himself accessible to everyone,” he explained. “Having lived here my whole life, it’s difficult to imagine who will take care of us now. We are a marginalised community, and it’s not easy for others to understand our needs,” said Kela.
Residents call on the new councillor to honour Marthinus Kainda’s legacy. They hope to find someone who can continue his work and unite the community.
Esther IIGaroeb from Tsintsabis highlighted the need for leaders who can genuinely connect with the community. “We want a leader who will listen to our concerns and advocate for our needs, both locally and regionally,” Esther said.
Despite having his office in Oshivelo, Marthinus's influence extended widely throughout the constituency. He made everyone feel included and valued, fostering a strong sense of belonging among the people he served, they say.
Ester Nghipangelwa, the Regional Electoral Officer for Oshikoto, said with elections scheduled for January 17, the ECN is busy with voter and civic education programmes.
