The City of Windhoek (CoW) has established a relocation site for flood victims at Farm 508 close to the Goreangab settlement.

The city has so far put up eight of the fifty tents donated by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and is busy clearing land for those who wish to set up permanent structures.

The Office of the Prime Minister donated 200 mattresses, blankets, and stoves to flood victims moving to the site.

So far, only three families have moved to the area and have received their donated items.

While some have moved, others are reluctant, saying the area lacks municipal services and is a far distance from schools and other essential services.

Chief Regional Officer at the |Khomas Regional Council, Clement Mafwila, stated that they are working hard to bring services closer to the area and have already started handing over sites to contractors for the construction of these services.

"We are faced with a problem where people are resisting coming here. We do understand it's because of the services. We want to assure everybody that we are bringing services closer to the people, meaning that tomorrow we will be handing over to a contractor the sites where there will be a site for a police station; it will be fenced off. And then we also have a site for the clinic where it will be fenced off. And then also a site for a prefab clinic. We also have a site for primary and secondary schools. That also will be fenced this financial year or next financial year," said Clement Mafwila, CRO of the |Khomas Regional Council.

Mafwila says they will assist those who have lost their national documents, working hand in hand with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

They will also assist those who lost their children's school items through the back-to-school program.

He further urges those who are still located in the riverbeds to make use of this opportunity to move from there, as each family will be granted permanent plots in the area.
