Gobabis Municipality is battling with paying back outstanding debts of more than N$100 million owed to NamPower and NamWater utility companies.
The debt has accumulated over a number of years.
This was revealed by the town's Mayor, Melba Tjozongoro, in an exclusive interview with nbc News.
According to the town's Mayor, Melba Tjozongoro, plans are underway to find a lasting solution on how to deal with the repayment of the debt, and the council has come up with some strategies, such as migrating from conventional to prepaid meter systems for both water and electricity.
Tjozongoro says that through involved key stakeholders, the council is working on new repayment structures that will also not hinder any council operations.
The mayor added that those residents and businesses that owe the council should also find ways on how to settle their outstanding bills.
Furthermore, despite limited resources, the council is also working tirelessly with developers to ensure that more land is developed for residential and business purposes.
Health and safety remain one of the concerns too at town, and this is due to a shortage of human resources and trucks that deal with cleanliness that are ageing; hence proper services are delayed, voiced Tjozongoro.
The mayor also reveals that some roads around town need serious upgrades to improve service provision to residents.
