Turning to regional developments, Namibia and Botswana agreed last year to lower roaming charges between the two countries.

The reduced tariffs aim to make cross-border communication more affordable and foster stronger connections between the two nations.

ICT Minister Emma Theofelus shared an update on this initiative during an address to her staff.

Effective since August 2024, the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia and the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority directed the mobile network operators in both countries—Telecom Namibia and Mobile Telecommunications Company, as well as Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited, Mascom Wireless Botswana, and Orange Botswana—to reduce roaming prices.

"This collaboration is a testament to our efforts to deliver affordable communication services to all Namibians, which will ultimately have a positive snowball effect on other sectors such as trade, tourism, and general cross-border connectivity. I am happy to inform you that I have engaged my counterparts from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Angola to sign collaboration agreements that will include the harmonization of roaming fees. This will significantly improve the lives of our people living along the borders of the country through enhanced and affordable access to connectivity."
