The chairperson of the Forum of German-speaking Namibians, Harald Hecht, bemoaned the "lack of transparency and feedback" regarding the ongoing genocide negotiations between Germany and Namibia.

Hecht's remarks come amid continued negotiations surrounding the genocide of the Herero and Nama people.

Hecht pointed to the lack of transparency and feedback as the primary hurdles in the negotiations, particularly with Germany and other involved parties.

He noted, "We are proud to have engaged in these discussions, but we have not received the necessary responses from either the German or Namibian governments. The lack of feedback and readiness to engage on these critical matters has led to a deep frustration within our community."

The negotiations, which began in December 2013, have not yet reached a resolution that adequately addresses the historical grievances stemming from the genocide.

Hecht further pointed out that “the biggest challenge” is that 50 years of delay are looming over the process, leaving future generations to carry the burden of this unresolved issue.

The Forum of German-speaking Namibians, he said, supports Namibia’s national government.

He acknowledged that while disagreements would naturally occur, the nations must find common ground to heal historical wounds. "We may disagree on certain points, but the path to reconciliation requires mutual respect and understanding," he added.

Hecht was speaking at the annual Okandjoze Chiefs Assembly underway in Windhoek.
