Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that he will respect the country's constitutional term limits and will not extend his tenure beyond the prescribed terms.
During a media briefing on Monday in Harare, Mnangagwa made these statements, as reported by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the ruling ZANU-PF party about potential constitutional amendments that could allow him to seek a third term.
Last October, the party reportedly passed a resolution to remove presidential term limits, aiming to enable Mnangagwa to remain in power beyond 2028.
Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi expressed the government's readiness to advance the necessary constitutional changes, stating, "The government is ready to move forward once lawmakers introduce the bill to amend the constitution."
Despite these internal party discussions, President Mnangagwa has reiterated his intention to step down after completing his second term.
