The Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, tabled a motion calling on the National Assembly to ratify the Revised African Maritime Transport Charter.

The charter aims to enhance cooperation among African nations in the maritime transport sector to harmonise policies, promote regular consultations on international maritime issues, and develop unified solutions for common challenges.

Namibia has not ratified the charter since it was signed 26 years ago.

Mutorwa explained that the revised charter aligns closely with the nation's maritime interests, particularly in promoting both national and regional transport linkages that are essential for boosting intra-Africa trade and driving economic integration.

The minister highlighted key areas of focus under the charter, including port reform and increased efficiency in port services, which are seen as vital for ensuring that African ports remain competitive globally.

In addition, he noted that a national inter-ministerial Blue Economy Committee is being established to implement a coordinated approach to ocean governance.

This initiative is expected to unlock the vast potential of the ocean economy in addressing pressing socio-economic challenges.
