The Namibia Meteorological Service has issued a critical weather alert, warning the public to exercise extreme caution due to deep tropical moisture developing over the Namibian interior from tomorrow into the weekend.
Heavy to widespread thunderstorms are expected across several regions, including those in the north-central and northwest, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, |Khomas, eastern Hardap, and eastern ||Kharas.
According to Chief Meteorological Forecaster Odillo Kgobetsi, residents in these areas can expect significant rainfall, potentially leading to localised flash flooding, causing traffic congestion, and posing risks of crop damage and livestock loss.
Some areas may experience more than 50 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, increasing the risk of flash floods. The wet weather could compromise the structural integrity of buildings, including homes and toilets, which may collapse unexpectedly.
Kgobetsi emphasised the importance of taking immediate precautionary measures, including avoiding crossing flooded or fast-flowing water; limiting outdoor activities during thunderstorms; seeking shelter in safe buildings; avoiding open areas, tall trees, and metal structures; avoiding speeding; and driving with caution.
