The Namibian government has connected some rural communities just north of Keetmanshoop to the national electricity grid under its rural electrification project.
The Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, officially inaugurated the N$6.8 million rural electrification project.
The communities that benefit are Itsawises, Jakkalsdraai, Jakkalsvlei, Constancia 1 & 2, and Enoch.
"Today we do more than just turn on lights; we ignite possibilities, we enable communities to grow, and we enable communities to prosper. And to the people of Itsawises, the people of Jakkalsdraai, the people of Jakkalsvlei, the people of Constancia 1 & 2, and Enoch. I urge you, this is your opportunity. Make use of it wisely, work together, create business, and build sustainable futures."
NamPower Managing Director Simson Haulofu believes access to modern electricity services is a prerequisite for poverty eradication and an enabler of human and economic development.
"Unfortunately, getting electricity access more quickly to vulnerable rural populations remains challenging, but as NamPower, we are determined to fulfil our mandate."
Also speaking at the occasion was ||Kharas Regional Council chairperson Joseph Isaacks, while incoming MP Gaudentia Krohne delivered ||Kharas Governor Aletha Frederick's message.
The communities of Nuwe Put and Kameel River are next to benefit from the rural electricity project.
