The much-anticipated Dr. Hage Geingob N$60 commemorative banknote is officially in circulation.

The banknote, which was launched two weeks ago, can now be accessed by the public.

It symbolises and celebrates the legacy of the late President as well as honours his contribution to Namibia's independence, nation-building, and development.

The N$60 banknote has now been officially released by the central bank's Governor Johannes !Gawaxab in Windhoek.

Governor !Gawaxab expressed excitement and encouraged Namibians to use the banknote.

"We are here to formally issue this. This is circulating; this is legal tender. Namibians can use this to buy goods and services, so today's event was to say that it is a legal tender to buy in shops. Namibians, let's go out there and use the Namibian dollar commemorative 60-dollar note to buy goods and services. It's legal."

The Bank of Namibia reiterated that, as part of its commitment to financial stability and national pride, the note is only available through in-person withdrawals.

This is to ensure that its physical circulation remains directly within the control of the nation's financial institutions.

The central bank says the note is a one-off print and is to be considered a collector's item that also serves as legal tender.
