The Electricity Control Board (ECB) has laid down guidelines for regional electricity distributors following the death of eight people over the past four years due to electrocution.
In 2022/2025, 17 accidents were reported, with eight of them being fatalities caused by electrocution.
Five of the eight fatalities occurred in NORED's jurisdiction, while three deaths were recorded at CENORED, City of Windhoek and Erongo RED, with each recording one death.
Among the guidelines laid down by ECB Chief Executive Officer Robert Kahimise, who was speaking during an engagement with NORED, employees are not permitted to work on live low- or medium-voltage networks.
NORED was also cautioned to be vigilant and inspect possible illegal connections and extensions, especially outside townlands.
It should also monitor, detect, and address illegal connections in a timely manner for the safety of consumers, among others.
He made these remarks at a joint media briefing held at Ondangwa in the Oshana Region.
