The !Gai-||naxas Farmers Development Cooperative in the ||Kharas Region has distributed goats to its members through a profit-sharing initiative.
Speaking at the handover of goats to twelve members at Gainachas Settlement, the cooperative's chairperson, Paul Kahuika, said the gesture is a reflection of its growth over the years, amid challenges like drought.
He added that sharing the goats as compensation with members was possible because of the commitment and loyalty of the members, as well as the cooperative's ongoing efforts to empower them.
Each of the twelve beneficiaries received three goats.
The cooperative currently has a membership of forty-three.
"After identifying the beneficiaries and the number of ewe goats today. We still have plus/minus 190 mixed stock in our kraal. We hope to find 15-16 beneficiaries by the end of the year, thanks to the good rain this season. But if not, if that idea is not working, we will do it next year this time around."
The Berseba Constituency Councillor, Jeremia Goeieman, who witnessed the goats' distribution, commended the cooperative for the initiative.
The Berseba Constituency office initially supported the cooperative's initiative and donated twenty ewes and a ram to it when the project was first launched.
The cooperative's business analyst, Isak Ruben, also lauded the cooperative's initiative and encouraged other communities to try the cooperative way.
