Namibian filmmakers have shared with the nbc News what the opportunity created by Multi-Choice Namibia means for the growth of the film industry in the country in terms of skills development and employment creation.

The filmmakers participated in the Ombura film project, an initiative of Multi-Choice.

Esther Beukes, filmmaker and Chairperson of the Namibia Film Commission, highlighted MultiChoice Namibia's intentional efforts to develop the local film sector.

“MultiChoice didn’t just provide funding; they prepared filmmakers before and during their projects,” she explained. Beukes praised the accountability structure established through mentorship by experienced producers, which ensured high-quality productions. She described the initiative as transformative, with a clear focus on nurturing the industry.

Namibian filmmaker Errol Geingob, known for his work on Wish for Death, shared his gratitude for being part of the Ombura project. He noted that the initiative creates consistent opportunities for filmmakers, allowing them to secure at least one project annually. Geingob expressed hopes for Namibian films to reach global platforms like Netflix and Prime Video, envisioning greater international exposure for local productions.

Scriptwriter Tekla Nakale, an alumna of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), acknowledged the strides made by MultiChoice while calling for additional support from other funders and organisations. “We are in a golden era of filmmaking,” Nakale said, emphasising that while the industry is growing steadily, more investment is needed to sustain and expand opportunities for filmmakers.
