Trade between Namibia and the United Kingdom has tripled in the last four years.

The total trade volume increased to 385 million pounds from 120 million pounds in 2021.

The UK's outgoing High Commissioner, Charles Moore, provided this update to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House.

The main drivers for the trade increase are agriculture and machinery, and the British diplomat says the optimism now is to build on this trade in emerging industries.

"I think there are a lot more opportunities for further trade in goods and services and education. We are looking at oil and gas, and we are exploring all the opportunities that are available in Namibia, which are quite numerous, so it is a bright future for our bilateral trading relationship."

High Commissioner Moore is concluding his assignment of diplomatic duty to Namibia after four years, a posting he says allowed him to crisscross the country to promote bilateral programs.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who received Moore during her tenure as Minister of International Relations, was pleased with his work in Namibia.

"I am really happy, High Commissioner, that you found time to meet as many people as possible in addition to enjoying the nature, and as you rightly said, that has helped you to understand us better and to find common areas of cooperation. As I said, what we want to focus on in our cooperation is trade and investment as the vehicles to help us address the challenges we are facing, such as unemployment. Unless you have investments, your economy will not grow, and I am glad that there is interest. The oil and gas sector emerged during your time, and we really have to see how best we can develop it into a sector that Namibian people and friends who can invest in it can be proud of, in addition to other areas of cooperation for the people of the UK and Namibia. Very historic."

High Commissioner Moore will be leaving Namibia in about a week's time.
