The new governor of Oshikoto Region, Sacky Kathindi, has promised to prioritise agriculture, address unemployment and enhance local business opportunities.

Kathindi also plans to develop an abattoir in the region to boost economic activities.

He shared his plans during the official handover ceremony of the office of the governor with former Oshikoto Governor Penda Ya Ndakolo.

"We see the need for an abattoir facility in the region. Oshikoto Region has no public abattoir, and therefore an abattoir will add value to our livestock industry, creating jobs and increasing revenue."

The Regional Council Chairperson Samuel Shivute welcomed the new governor, saying he is familiar with the region and would be the catalyst that would change and develop it.

"This is indeed a right appointment because comrade Kathindi is not new to this region; he is familiar with all the ins and outs of this region. Hence, Oshikoto, a land of vibrant culture, resilient people and immense economic and investment potential, now looks upon you, comrade Kathindi.

According to the Namibia Labour Force Survey of 2023, the Oshikoto Region has an unemployment rate of 38 percent and has a population of 257,302 inhabitants who reside in 11 constituencies.
