The Chairperson of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) board emphasised the important role of the corporation to inform, educate and entertain the nation with accurate and reliable information.
Lazarus Jacobs made the remarks during an interview with sister programme Good Morning Namibia on Thursday.
"So what we did is we said, as public broadcasters, public broadcasters are notoriously not known for keeping up with technology. And we said, Look, Namibia is a small population, and we have a very, very young population.' As you saw in the last census, the population of Namibia – almost 70% of that – is below the age of 35, so you need to be responsive to your population, and the population is very tech savvy. Information. And content is consumed digitally now, and that's basically what we did. And to your question, yes, it is very, very relevant. It's going to be relevant for years to come."
The chairperson further expanded on the role of the broadcaster in informing the nation on the government agendas.
Jacobs also touched on the importance of putting out content that speaks to the people on the ground. Which the NBC has been striving towards with the introduction of new programmes.
"Leveraging the technology and the platform that we have. With the digital platform we have, we are going to produce more and more programmes. Don't forget that. Don't forget that our population is very young. So the content that we are creating, the content that's been consumed, will be consumed primarily by so we need to have programmes that are responsive to that. And there are quite a few programmes. The president said we must never say things; the things are in a pipeline, but programmes are being developed as we speak right now, which will speak to who we are as a country."
