Descendants of the Nama and Ovaherero communities in Namibia gathered in Lüderitz, located in the ||Kharas Region, for the annual Genocide Memorial at Shark Island.
Organized by the Nama Traditional Leaders Association, this event commemorates the island's dark history as a concentration camp for Nama and Herero prisoners, following the extermination order issued by German General Lothar von Trotha against the two tribes.
Men, women, and children were sent to various concentration camps across the country, where they faced horrific conditions.
Many were murdered, with their mutilated bodies discarded into the sea at Shark Island. Others endured torture, and women were subjected to rape.
As part of the annual commemoration, the two communities marched through the streets of Lüderitz, singing songs of praise for the fallen heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives. The Genocide Memorial also seeks to honor all those who lost their lives at Shark Island.
