Deputy Prime Minister Natangwe Ithete is currently in the Omusati Region, assessing the flood situation as delegated by Head of State Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. His mission is to observe the impact of the floods on people and property.

Having previously visited the Ohangwena Region, he will conclude his tour in the Oshana Region.

In Omusati, flood victims are currently housed in tents at the Etunda ELCIN church camp, where 68 households, comprising 364 individuals, including children, are temporarily accommodated while water levels recede.

The government is providing essential amenities, and there is hope that the water will soon subside, allowing residents to return to their homes.

However, the flood victims have expressed a need for mosquito nets and are requesting that nurses visit the camp to conduct malaria testing, as there are many mosquito bites reported in the area.

Additionally, the affected residents urge the government to excavate dams to capture rainwater during the rainy season, thereby minimizing future flooding.

Some roads in the region have exacerbated flooding due to insufficient culverts.

Ithete stressed the importance of revisiting feasibility studies and encouraged engineers to consider input from elderly residents when constructing roads in their communities. Moving forward, he advocated for the construction of quality bridges and high-standard roads to prevent the annual need for rehabilitation after rainstorms.
