Police in Swakopmund have boosted their presence in public spaces, including through traffic controls, to ensure a safe Easter weekend for citizens.

Visitors continue to flock to the coastal town of Swakopmund to enjoy the various tourism activities present at the hub of adventure.

However, it is during the festive seasons, including Easter, when criminal activities also increase.

Mayor of Swakopmund, Blasius Goraseb, said security has been beefed up with extra members from the reserve force assisting.

The Municipality has further invested in CCTV cameras to monitor the crime hotspots and help the security forces in the detection of illegal activities.

The spokesperson of the Namibian Police in the region, Ileni Shapumba, added that police are running an operation called New Era, aimed at, among others, preventing crime, maintaining law and reducing accidents.

At the Swakopmund roadblock, roadworthy tests on vehicles are a priority.

The Swakopmund mayor wished all visitors a safe long weekend and further cautioned them to watch out for municipal workers who are patching up potholes in some areas.

He further commended the tourists for boosting the local economy through their accommodation and restaurant bookings, as well as other activities.
