Many Namibians and visitors are expected to spend their Easter weekend in Swakopmund.

The popular holiday destination has experienced high levels of traffic into the town since the early hours of this morning.

President Mbumba urges Namibians to embrace compassion this Easter weekend

Namibians have been encouraged to recommit to the values of compassion, sacrifice, and care for one another as they collectively build a peaceful, safe, and prosperous Namibian house.

President Nangolo Mbumba extended these words of encouragement in a statement, on the occasion of the Easter weekend.

He urged the citizens to steer clear of any conduct that is hurtful, drive safely, and show respect towards law enforcement officers.

The  law enforcement agencies have also been called upon to redouble their efforts to ensure a crime-free weekend.

More suicide incidents were recorded over the past Easter weekend countrywide compared to last year.

The youngest person to take their life in this way was a 21-year-old male, while the eldest was an 84-year-old female.
 
Considering the six suicide cases reported across the country, police are urging the public to speak out concerning burning issues.

Chief Inspector Elifas Kawinga of the Namibian Police Public Relations Division says the growing rate of suicide cases in the country points to the need for intervention.

Easter weekend went by in relative peace and quiet in the |Khomas Region, with police reporting a decline in criminal activity compared to what is normally the case over the holidays.

The Namibian Police's Commander in |Khomas, Commissioner David Indongo commended residents for their good behaviour over the long weekend, describing the holidays as calm.

More than 300 inbound cars passed the Swakopmund roadblock during the early morning hours of Friday, and police expect a high number of inbound vehicles as the Easter weekend progresses.

Swakopmund is known for being an ever-popular getaway for locals and visitors, offering plenty of opportunities for sports, adventure, and plain old-fashioned fun.

Namibians, mostly from Windhoek and the southern parts of the country, made their way to Swakopmund.

Many people were seen swimming and playing beach volleyball and soccer in town, while others lazed around in the sun.
