Police in the Kavango East Region have listened to the local residents who have been complaining about not feeling safe.

NamPol will now carry out regular patrols for the next two months.

Kavango East Regional Commander, Commissioner Andreas Haingura, told the law enforcement officers that it was time to bring order back to the region.

"Communities are complaining. They are concerned about their safety. Rundu has become lawless. I believe it is the end. We can no longer tolerate that. These young people can no longer terrorise our community while we're still here. Let's go and do our job. Our aim is to go and prevent crime. Robust, aggressive crime prevention, where we don't leave any stone unturned. We do stop and search, whether it's cars or people. I want knives; I want pangas and drunk drivers."

Head of Crime Prevention Division, Deputy Commissioner Lucia Kahuure, said having law enforcement officers on foot patrol in the community makes it easier for the public to approach them.

"Our visibility deters some of the crimes. The criminals cannot commit if they see the police around, and everybody who is found having a problem, the police are there, and they can just report. They don't need to run to the police stations because we are on the ground, and we are here for their safety."

Even though the operation is scheduled for two months, Kahuure said criminals do not sleep, and neither will the police.

"We are going to end in June, but if the situation is still the same, we will go on with the operation. This is not the end of it. We want to ensure that the citizens of Kavango East are protected and safe and that they enjoy their ride to freedom."
