Justice and Labour Relations Minister Wise Immanuel has said that continued decentralisation of services will facilitate economic empowerment in the regions to easily access services.
Immanuel said this when he inaugurated the new Social Security Commission building at Otjiwarongo, cutting the distance residents have to travel to Windhoek to access services.
The minister said the opening of the Social Security Office has also boosted the town's infrastructure development.
"Through this investment, we are going to see an enhancement and increase in the revenue of the town of the municipality because they will be paying for water and electricity. Through that, they are going to contribute, you know, to the revenue base, through which the potholes that we see in the roads will be able to be fixed. Isn't that wonderful?"
Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa called on the commission to also open similar offices in the Kunene and Kavango West Regions.
"You can even look at sub-centres that are far from regional centres. Some of the sub-centres could be 150 kilometres from Otjiwarongo; some are 70 kilometres. As funds become available, not this year but as we go, we should look at sub-centres within regions. In some, regions are very vast, but they may be less populated, but the distance is too long. I therefore wish to record my high appreciation."
According to Milka Mungunda, the Executive Officer of the Social Security Commission, the unemployment insurance fund will soon introduce a number of social benefits.
"What that means is that if you are retrenched, Social Security will come in and see how we could assist you while you are being retrenched and while we are looking for a job. If you are unemployed, there are certain things that we're also going to put in place to make sure that you are not going to be destitute. That is what we want to do. And we're also going to introduce an additional pension fund so that everybody within the borders of Namibia, when you reach the age of 60, will be enjoying the pension fund."
Otjozondjupa Governor John ||Khamuseb encouraged locals to make use of the Commission's services.
"It must start with the local economy officer. It must start with the local development communities at various towns. Our president reiterated yesterday – it is not business as usual – what you promised us during your interview as the local economic development officer should come to fruition. And you are going to walk your talk and report monthly so that we can move on, read related issues, discuss issues, identify problem areas and work together. Only we ourselves will liberate ourselves economically."
