Members of Parliament in the National Assembly asked the Prime Minister questions about education, oil and gas, and the rising budget of the Presidency.

PDM leader McHenry Venaani said many children from the San community go to school but do not finish their education.

He explained that even though the government provides some support, it is not enough.

Venaani proposed the need for innovative solutions to assist these children in finishing their education.

One of his suggestions was to build a school in the desert, where many San communities live.

Venaani also raised concerns about the Office of the Presidency wanting to manage the oil and gas sector.

He said the oil industry is known to be corrupt around the world and questioned what exactly the new department would do at the Presidency.

He asked if oil deals would now be decided directly by the President and how investors would be chosen.

Imms Nashinge from the IPC also questioned why the budget for the Presidency has been increased.

Swapo MP Dr. Tobie Aupindi explained that, in many countries, oil and gas are managed at the presidential level.

However, he said that in Namibia’s case, the current budget increase is only for salaries, not for new projects.

Meanwhile, AR leader Job Amupanda pointed out that there is a big jump in the budget for the offices of former Presidents.

He gave an example that if the budget was N$16 million last year, it is now N$29 million, asking how that is possible if Namibia lost two former Presidents.
