The City of Windhoek and PowerCom Namibia signed a memorandum of understanding to install 28 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the city in a bid to prevent and reduce crime.
The city will allocate the CCTV cameras to selected areas to assist law enforcement agencies in fighting crimes.
PowerCom Namibia's Chief Executive Officer, Beatus Amadhila, said they will be allocating more CCTV cameras every year.
"PowerCom is currently finalising the installation of CCTV cameras at 7 identified sites, which I anticipate to be finalised within the next two months. For the 2025/2026 financial year, a further provision for x15 to x20 sites is being finalised, and upon approval, the final plan shall be submitted to the city in line with the terms of the MoU and subsequent installation. We anticipate making similar commitments for the ensuing financial years for as long as it takes."
The agreement aims to transform Windhoek into a smart and sustainable city by 2027.
Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja said that the two organisations had joined forces to expand digital connectivity and improve infrastructure.
"The technological landscape of Namibia is evolving rapidly, and the City of Windhoek is determined to be at the forefront of this transformation. By joining forces with PowerCom Namibia (Pty) Ltd, a key player in expanding digital connectivity and community development, we are laying a strong foundation for enhanced service delivery, improved infrastructure, and greater economic opportunities for all our residents."
Larandja stated that the partnership will address the need for better access to digital services, improved safety, and sustainable urban growth.
