Vice President Lucia Witbooi, joined by the staff of the Presidency, embarked on a cleaning campaign at the State House and Old State House, respectively, this morning.

The cleaning follows a Cabinet directive for a nationwide cleanup campaign for all government offices, ministries and agencies, which is expected to continue until the end of June.

The initiative aims to promote cleanliness and hygiene within government institutions as well as maintain a clean and healthy working environment.

The vice president underscored the importance of maintaining a clean living environment, emphasising that now is the perfect moment for government institutions to set a positive example.

"Therefore, we are gathered here today. I will also join them. I am a member of my team's disability group. They are represented; the marginalised group is represented, and staff from my office are here to comply with that directive. The importance of working in a clean environment is the duty of every head of the office and also of the country to put emphasis on. Because it stimulates the end result of your work. So the importance of working in a clean environment is very, very important."

Additionally, it is part of the broader objective for Windhoek to regain its status as the cleanest capital city in Africa, which it lost to Rwanda's Kigali in 2013.
