A delegation from the Parliament of Sao Tome and Principe visited Namibia's National Assembly on Thursday to strengthen ties between the parliaments of the two countries.

The visit was led by Domingos Boa Morte, the Secretary General of the São Tomé Parliament.

He said the purpose of the visit was to share ideas and experiences between the two parliaments and build a strong relationship.

Speaking through a translator, Boa Morte said that a memorandum of agreement is currently being prepared.

Once it is signed, it will allow both countries to work closely together and start official exchange programmes between their parliaments.

"The experience we had is not only with the National Assembly, but we have moved around and visited the port in Walvis Bay, as well as Meatco and lastly the diamond company."

He thanked the Namibian Parliament for the warm welcome, saying the delegation felt very well received.

Yuri Carvalho Pires dos Santos, the Director in the Office of the Speaker in São Tomé, also shared his impressions from the visit.

He said he also enjoyed visiting Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, especially seeing the desert.

He added that visiting a diamond company and holding real diamonds was an unforgettable experience.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, expressed her pleasure at seeing the growing cooperation between the two countries, explaining that different public offices are working hard to turn good intentions into real actions, especially through the draft agreement that is being prepared.

"We are committed as a National Assembly to ensure that all activities are carried out to finalise this draft agreement so that we sign it and that we fully implement it."

The Secretary of the National Assembly, Esther Kaapanda, also shared her support for the partnership, saying it is important for Namibians to learn from and work with other African countries like São Tomé and Príncipe.

During the visit, the delegation extended an invitation to the Namibian Parliament to attend the upcoming 50th Independence Day celebrations of São Tomé and Príncipe, scheduled for 11 July 2025.
