The Law Reform and Development Commission, in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, is reviewing the MVA Fund Act.

Proposed amendments to the legislation will now be subjected to nationwide consultations.

The proposed changes aim to remove numerical values from the Act and move them to regulations.

Senior Legal Officer for the Directorate of Law Reform and Policy Legislation, Malakia Singandu, says it takes long to amend legislation, but if the amount is set in regulations, it will be quicker and reflect current socio-economic realities.

Chief of Corporate Affairs at the MVA Fund, John Haufiku, says the benefits granted under the MVA Act of 2007 are outdated as medical and funeral costs have increased over time. He says moving the numerical values to regulations will enable the Minister of Works and Transport to determine the amounts granted to beneficiaries.

Haufiku says the reason for the proposed changes is to save lives and improve efficiency.
