The Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector is working to change the public's perception that vocational training caters only for those with low grades who don't qualify for university entrance.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day TVET Fair at Nkurenkuru, Kavango West Governor Verna Sinimbo urged learners to pursue courses in the field of vocational education, emphasising that Namibia's growth depends on the skills these institutions provide.

"Those people, they are here to change our lives. They are here to develop our region, our local authorities. That's why we need to give them all the support they need. I was very, very happy when I heard about the Kavago West Vocational Training Centre also opening its doors in our region, because this is the way to go. We cannot talk about Kavango West developing if we don't have vocational training centres."

She also said that investing in vocational training aligns with Namibia's Vision 2030, which aims to transform the country into an industrialised nation.

Speaking on behalf of the Nkurenkuru Mayor, town council official Matheus Mpande said the council is committed to supporting vocational training to transform the country and reduce poverty.

"As a council, we are committed to supporting the expansion of TVET infrastructure and opportunity in our region. We will continue to create an enabling environment for investment in skill development and innovation. We want our young people, not just from Cohen's guru, but all from all corners of Namibia, to see TVET as a path of divinity, productivity, and prosperity."

Education Directorate's Diagnostic and Advisory Training Services Chief Education Officer, Florian Tshimweetheni, urged the public to stop seeing vocational training as a backup option.

"TVET is not a second choice. It is a smart choice. It prepares you for real jobs that are in high demand, and it gives you practical skills that you can use to start your own business. It creates jobs, and it contributes to the development of our beautiful region and our country at large."
