Namibia's vision of an inclusive and advanced digital and telecommunication landscape is steadily becoming a reality.
This development follows the launch of the National Digital Strategy and National Emergency Telecommunications Plan by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies, which are aimed at transforming the country's digital future and improving emergency response systems.
By integrating modern digital technologies and enhancing connectivity, Namibia aims to build more inclusive and resilient systems capable of efficiently responding to emergencies and minimising the impact of common and unpredictable disasters, such as droughts, floods, fires, and storms, on communities.
In a speech read on her behalf, MICT Minister Emma Theofelus highlighted that the National Emergency Telecommunications Plan will enable timely communication, which is crucial for saving lives through early disaster detection, mitigation, response, and recovery.
Theofelus reiterated the urgent need for effective implementation, coordination, and unified action, especially in times when citizens need help.
"The NETP will enable better coordination, quicker responses and stronger national capabilities to protect our citizens and infrastructure when disaster strikes. It also introduces vital improvements, such as the use of mobile-based alerting systems, satellite communications, and multi-platform early warning systems."
The National Digital Strategy outlines the course for Namibia's digital transformation, placing emphasis on bridging the digital divide.
"Digitalisation has become essential rather than optional. It's a fundamental necessity in a world that is increasingly interconnected and riven by data; our ability to leverage technology is directly tied to our potential to innovate, expand, and provide inclusive development for all Namibians. The NDS is not just a document; it's a vision of a smarter, more connected Namibia where digital infrastructure reaches every town and village, where digital skills are nurtured in every school and workplace, and where government services are accessible online."
As part of the launch, the NDS Think Tank Committee was also inaugurated.
The multi-sectoral body will play a key role throughout the duration of the strategy, providing oversight and strategic advice to ensure the effective implementation of the digital roadmap.
