Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, said the absence of a stormwater drainage system is an emergency that poses a danger to Rundu residents.
Sankwasa emphasised that immediate action is needed, as there are only three months left before the rainy season begins.
The minister was referring to the many sinkholes found in Rundu, which were caused by heavy rain. One particular sinkhole in the Tutungeni residential area has been expanding since the heavy rains experienced in February this year.
He said an intersectoral approach is necessary, with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Works, and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development working together to address the situation.
The minister also visited the Ngwangwa Pedestrian Bridge, which he donated to the Rundu Town Council three years ago through the North, South, West Fishing Company, at a cost of more than N$470,000.
However, he expressed disappointment at the lack of maintenance by the Rundu Town Council.
He added that there is another issue he would like to discuss with local councillors once they return from a trip to Zimbabwe. Some political leaders have claimed land without paying for it, and he said he will address this matter upon their return.
